FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
Are there separate beginners classes?
From time to time we run Introductory Adult Classes at the South Fish Creek Dojo. Beginners may also easily join into the regular class. Classes are adjusted slightly depending on who shows up for the class. We are committed to developing a solid foundation of basic techniques in our regular class and ensure that practice is safe and respectful for all members.
Do I need a uniform?
Yes. The basic uniform is a single weave judo gi. You can purchase your own independently, or we can order one for you. Cost is generally around $70. For the first few months, long sweat pants and a T-shirt are fine. A set of sandals, flip-flops (non outdoor use) are appropriate for inside the dojo. We practice barefoot on a gym mat surface and sometimes on a hardwood floor.
What are the classes like?
The basic structure of an Aikido class goes something like this:
- 1) set up and clean the mats.
- 2) formally start the class.
- 3) warm-up, rolling, knee walking etc.
- 4) basic body movement exercises
- 5) Sensei demonstrates a technique
- 6) members pair up and practice the technique for a while
- 7) repeat 5&6 three or four times
- 8) end of class exercises
- 9) formally end the class.
- 10) tear down the mats.
What is the atmosphere of the training?
Training is conducted in a safe, positive and usually fun manner. We do our best ensure that everyone is respectful to their partners, to their dojo and to themselves. We are not learning to fight. Enthusiastic training is encouraged. Aggressive behaviour is strongly discouraged.
Do you practice weapons?
Yes. We regularly practice solo and paired forms with bokken (wooden sword) and jo(short staff) training tools. Weapons training is not a requirement but it is an important part of our Aikido training.
Do I need my own weapons?
There are limited extra jo and bokken available at the dojo so people eventually purchase their own personal weapons.
Is there a specific discipline and philosophy behind Aikido?
Yes. The best thing to do to learn more about this is to get a copy of Greg O'Conner's "Aikido Student Handbook". It's a great written introduction to the philosophy and etiquette of the Aikido we practice.
Are there Aikido rankings?
Yes, in Aikikai Aikido we have the following ranks, in increasing order low to higher: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 kyu (white belt) and 1,2,3,4,... dan (black belt). We don't have coloured belts for adult classes, just black, brown and white. See the Children's Program Menu Item for Children's class ranking information
Are there any competitions in Alberta I could get into as an Aikido participant?
No. There is specifically no competition in the Aikido we practice. The idea is that there are no "winners" and "losers". Rather, everyone trains together cooperatively. We travel regularly to weekend training seminars with our instructor Y. Kawahara Shihan (7th dan) and other advanced teachers.
Does your club offer any program for a beginner of fourteen?
Yes. You can join the regular adult class at the South Fish Creek dojo. It's probably best to come and watch an entire class before you register.
Do I have to learn Japanese?
We run a fairly traditional dojo so all the technique names are presented in Japanese. It takes a while to learn the terms but it's not that difficult.
How long does it take to get good at it?
We are of the opinion that Aikido is a lifelong pursuit. You just diligently keep at it and learn enjoy the path rather than anticipating the destination.
Is Aikido effective self-defense?
It can be, but you have to practice diligently for a long time.
Where can I find more information?
There's a good Aikido Web Portal at http://www.aikiweb.com
